April Showers bring May Flowers

Spring has definitely arrived and April is the perfect time to start gardening.

You don’t need much space to start growing plants - a windowsill or balcony will do if you don’t have access to a garden. Materials are easy to find in our own kitchens and relatively cheap to order online.

Gardeners World Magazine has published a list of horticultural suppliers who are still able to deliver. The industry has suffered terribly in the past few weeks, as Alan Titchmarsh has highlighted in his campaign, with garden centres which are fully stocked ready for the growing season having to bin thousands of plants. Those who are still open and working safely within social distancing rules are welcoming customers. See the full list here: https://www.gardenersworld.com/how-to/grow-plants/coronavirus-online-plant-retailers/

Over the next few weeks, we are going to raid our archives and share our knowledge of gardening gained from 20 years of growing and greening in the city.

Look out for regular posts with tips and advice created and collated by Nicola Desmond as part of our ground-breaking Edible Bankside project.

Edible Bankside was an urban food growing initiative that BOST ran between 2012-2016, which saw the creation of over 25 urban food growing sites across the SE1 area. The regular slot on our website and social media channels is called Nicola’s Gardening Tips.

We look forwards to sharing more with you over the next few weeks.

To help us continue our work all donations are welcome at this challenging time for our team!
