What are the New London Awards?

The New London Awards, presented in association with the Mayor of London, are annual awards run by New London Architecture, a centre dedicated to improving the capital’s built environment. They celebrate the positive impact high-quality design, planning and construction can have on people, neighbourhoods and the city and showcase projects of all sizes, from community-led to large-scale developments, both built and in the planning stages.

All shortlisted projects across the 14 categories and 6 special prizes, including the Mayor's Prize, have been carefully selected by a team of London-based Expert Assessors. Each project will be presented to an International Jury ahead of the winners announcement in November.

What does this mean for Marlborough?

Marlborough Sports Garden is a rare space in the area - a free and accessible sports facility gifted to the community over hundred years ago and protected and cared for by Bankside Open Spaces Trust, with support from Southwark Council and funding from a range of sources.

It’s home to free sports activities, social sports groups and community events. Our development plans centre on increasing the garden’s community use with covered seating and indoor facilities, a café and a large welcoming entrance. While the site will benefit the whole community, we plan to increase our focus on sports activities for SEND children and young people and adults with disabilities, older people and those living with chronic conditions.

The plans have a strong environmental focus and we aim for the site to be carbon neutral. The project is part of a scheme designed to reduced waste within the construction industry.

Awards like these are a seal of approval for the plans and will help us fundraise for the project - ensuring our community has high quality, accessible sports facilities for years to come.

Our designs were created by architects Cullinan Studio with close input from our community through a series of conversations, consultations and feedback-giving opportunities to we are excited to hear what the New London Award juries have to say. Watch this space!
