The Mike Barnato Award: Celebrating Bruce!

We are delighted to announce that seven-year-old Bruce, a student at Charles Dickens Primary School, is the 2024 recipient of our Mike Barnato Award, which honours a participant of our after-school sports programme who demonstrates self-motivation, a passion for sport, and the ability to inspire others.

A passion for sport

The award was created in memory of our trustee Mike Barnato, who passed away in 2022. Throughout his career, and in his personal life, Mike championed motivation, sports participation and resilience.

Bruce demonstrates all the qualities our award celebrates in abundance. Since joining Marlborough Sports Garden’s after-school program in 2022, he has attended an impressive 68 sessions, participating in five different sports: basketball, beach tennis, beach volleyball, roller skating, and Samba Soccer. When asked about his favourite part of the program, Bruce said, “I love playing all the different sports! Especially beach volleyball and beach tennis, because they are on the sand, and I’ve made lots of new friends too.” His enthusiasm for trying new activities and his growing confidence has even inspired his younger sister Alice to get involved.

Bruce’s family were bursting with pride as they joined him to celebrate his achievement. Mum Seyhan said, “We’re so proud of Bruce for all his hard work and enthusiasm. He took his award to school to show his teacher and classmates. It’s wonderful to see him inspire his younger sister as well, and we’re thrilled to be part of today’s celebration.”

The award ceremony was made even more special by the attendance of several members of Mike Barnato’s family, including his three daughters, Katy, Susy, and Vicky, his granddaughter (Vicky’s daughter) Hannah, and Mike’s partner, Maggie Holmes. Also present was Katy’s partner, Andrew Rhimes. Reflecting on the day, Katy said, “My dad believed in the power of sport to inspire and bring out the best in people. Seeing Bruce’s passion and joy today, I know he would be very proud.”

On this sunny day at Marlborough Sports Garden, Bruce received a sustainably sourced trophy and a £20 sports voucher.

Through this award, we aim to continue Mike’s legacy by recognising young people like Bruce, who embody his positive spirit and love for sport. Congratulations, Bruce! Keep up the great work!
