Future Gardeners on a roll at Morley College Stockwell Centre

Our new partnership teaching garden at Morley College Stockwell Centre is blooming, thanks to the dedication and teamwork of the 23rd cohort of Future Gardeners.

As part of their free horticultural course, our latest cohort of students worked together to bring new life to the garden’s main border, gaining hands-on experience and creating a vibrant new outdoor space in the process.

The planting project was part of their City & Guilds Level 1 Horticulture qualification the students earn by doing our Future Gardeners programme. With expert guidance and a generous plant donation from Garden on a Roll our students were able to take their classroom learning directly into the garden.

The team began by clearing and preparing the border. Once the space was ready, they laid out Garden on a Roll’s unique planting design paper. This clever and accessible planting system helps gardeners position each plant. It’s a fantastic way to help our students learn about garden design principles, plant placement, and soil preparation.

This collaborative planting session turned an empty bed into a structured, thriving display. The finished garden not only adds beauty to the college grounds but also acts as a long-term learning resource for future students on our Future Gardeners free horticultural course.

We extend our sincere thanks to Anthony Henn of Garden on a Roll — their continued support for our Future Gardeners course is a boost to our student’s learning journeys and has helped us create beautiful beds in several locations in London.

Our Future Gardeners programme offers people of all backgrounds the opportunity to develop practical green skills through a free horticultural course. This latest planting project shows the real impact that hands-on learning can have — on students, on community spaces, and on the future of urban gardening.
