What the Job Involves

This is an exciting and varied role working with an award-winning environmental and community charity in Central London. You will be supporting local communities to take on the ongoing management of existing community green spaces and to create new or improved spaces through the recruitment, training, and empowerment of Green Hub participants.

We require someone with the ability to liaise and build strong relationships with stakeholders in the area, ensuring long-term audience engagement and partnership working.

You will need excellent project management skills, including monitoring and evaluation, and a methodical approach to planning and delivery.

A key part of the role involves planning fulfilling and engaging workshops and gardening sessions that follow health and safety guidelines and include appropriate risk assessments. You will have experience leading groups in outdoor environments and ensure the safe use of gardening tools. A good level of horticultural knowledge, including park or garden maintenance and food growing, is essential.

You’ll also need excellent written and verbal communication skills, a friendly and welcoming manner, and the flexibility to work collaboratively as part of a small, dedicated team. This includes helping deliver wider charity events, volunteering sessions, and community activities.

In practice, the Green Hub Facilitator will:

  • Manage day-to-day activity at the Green Hub, ensuring it’s a welcoming and safe space for all
  • Deliver workshops and events on sustainability, food growing, and environmental education
  • Support and mentor volunteers and participants in practical green projects
  • Promote wellbeing through nature-based activities and gentle movement sessions
  • Collaborate with partners, schools, and local groups to maximise impact
  • Track participation and report on outcomes for funders and stakeholders

This role blends practical, hands-on work with facilitation skills. You will be the face of the Green Hub, engaging people of all ages and abilities, helping them learn, share, and connect through green activities.

The Power of Local Gardens

Our Green Hub isn’t just a space to grow plants, it’s a hub for learning, connection, and wellbeing. Deeply embedded in the community, our support on these gardens provide residents with opportunities to engage in practical environmental action, develop skills, and connect with others in a welcoming, inclusive setting.

Why Community Gardening Matters

A growing body of research shows that community gardening has significant benefits for physical health, mental wellbeing, and social cohesion.

Participants experience reduced stress and anxiety, increased physical activity, improved nutrition, and stronger social ties. Gardens also provide safe, restorative spaces for reflection and gentle movement, helping people feel grounded and connected.

Our Green Hub shows these benefits in action. Over the past year, participants and volunteers have:

  • Grown vegetables, herbs, and native plants to enhance biodiversity and support food hubs
  • Taken part in practical sustainability workshops, including composting, upcycling, and nature-based crafts
  • Enjoyed gentle circulation and outdoor activity, boosting mood and energy
  • Built social connections across age, cultural, and ability groups, fostering stronger community ties

Funding and Support

This work is made possible thanks to the generous support of National Lottery Community Fund and City Bridge Trust. Their backing enables us to run inclusive, sustainable, and community-owned green spaces that nurture both people and nature.

Looking Ahead

As research into nature-based interventions grows, the importance of community gardens and hubs continues to be recognised. These spaces are vital for wellbeing, resilience, and environmental education. Integrating gardens and green hubs into local strategies for health, learning, and sustainability is becoming best practice.

Our Green Hub will continue to expand, offering more workshops, volunteer opportunities, and inclusive programs that empower residents to take part in environmental action, connect with nature, and strengthen community ties.
